Server memory plays a big role in the performance of the operating system. Sufficient server memory will go a long way in ensuring that the OS performs optimally. There are different types of memory but all perform the same role. So the basic mode of managing your server is similar. The first thing you need to have is enough RAM in your system. This will enable the server to use its portion and leave enough for the operating system and virtual memory. The server memory manages itself automatically, although you can change the options settings accordingly. The only settings you should not adjust are configuration settings. A slight change in these can lead to malfunctioning of the OS. There is a default minimum and maximum server memory which you can change.

Changing the server memory options mostly occurs when you make a memory upgrade. You can add more RAM to your system and allow the server to take up more of that space. Most people’s computers use 32 bit OSs. 30 out of this automatically go to the server. In 64bit computers, 60 – 62 go to the server. Once you upgrade your memory, you must change the min and max server memory as need be.
