DAIMUM was created in 2004 by a group of students at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and with the students’ efforts; DAIMUN is fast becoming one of the world’s most recognized Model United Nations. Dhirubhai Ambani International Model United Nations was created on the lines of THIMUN which stands for The Hague International Model United Nations. The 2009 DAIMUN which lasted for 4 days, 19th to the 20th of December was an elaborately planned and enormously successful affair. The theme chosen for the DAIMUN was ‘The Energy Crisis’ which is most apt due to the energy crisis which is currently the one of the greatest threats to humanity. The items on agenda were carefully picked after in-depth research and going through various feasibility studies. In DAIMUN each participant is confronted with real-life situations faced by the world that needs to be debated at the United Nations. After a quiet night in the Foreign Exchange markets in Asian trading, the markets opened today with some sell pressure on the pound particularly against the USD. The pound slipped from a touch over 1.48 down to 1.4760. This could be attributed to weaker consumer confidence data released last night- the May index fell sharply by 10 points from April to 65.
However the prospect of another Mervyn King speech tonight at Mansion House could be more on the button, spooking the sterling bulls. In the recent past, whenever Mervyn king has made a public address sterling has always suffered due to his negative but admittedly realistic sentiment on the UK economy. Data already released this morning focused on the UK jobless sector, the data was actually not too bad with May jobless claims in at -30,900 better than the forecasted -20,000. In addition the claimant count rate came in at 4.6% and the unemployment rate at 7.9%, again slightly better than forecasts at 4.7% and 8% respectively. A muted response to this morning’s data for the pound as the market is well aware that unemployment levels should suffer following the emergency budget next week. Look for the pound to remain subdued today ahead of Mr. Kings address later- in fact I would not expect any significant movement in the pound until after Tuesday’s budget.
The surprise in the international markets is the recent fight back of the euro which pushed to 1.2353 yesterday against the USD. This is despite further pressure in the bond markets- this morning we have seen the Spanish/German 10 year government bond yield widen to 218bps, this is a lifetime high and Portuguese/German equivalent widened to 312bps. The move higher for the euro despite the negatives looks reflective of a short squeeze in the markets to shake up what was a market biased on shorting the euro. This is a relief rally for international payments and transfers which I would not expect to be sustained especially if the bond markets continue to deteriorate. On top of this there is also news of disagreement to stress testing of the European banking sector with Spain in favour and Germany against, which raises the question why are the Germans so against the idea?
The USD has unwound some of its recent gains following a week with little excitement (like the World Cup so far) and no huge surprises leading to gradual appetite coming back into the frame. Later today from the US, the pick of which is the Producer Price Index, Industrial production and a speech from Fed chairman Ben Bernanke.

his year Mumbai Indians had a great run at the Indian Premier League season three and some of the credit if not all goes to the team’s co-owner and wife of Mukesh Ambani, Mrs. Nita Ambani. One of the most influential business women in the country, Nita is now a cricket aficionado with immense passion for the game and she has been educating herself on the nuances of the game since her journey with IPL began in 2008. In an interview to editor-in-chief of Indian Express, Shekhar Gupta, Ms. Ambani said that she is an obsessed mother now with all her time devoted to cricket. She admitted that IPL is like a dream run for her and this association has consumed all of her attention to the point that she ate, slept and breathed only cricket during the season. Her dedication certainly paid off in the splendid display of ‘cricket-rionics’ during the IPL 3 finale. She has stood by as a pillar of support during the good and bad times that the team has been witness to.
In 2008, Nita Ambani strengthened the Mumbai Indians team with a successful bid of seven players including Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan. Before the onset of second season of Indian Premier League, Mrs. Ambani spoke to Hindustan Times and confessed that before venturing into IPL, her knowledge of cricket was very elementary and was restricted to few successful names of the cricket world. Initially she was involved only with designing of the jersey and the making of Mumbai Indians’ theme song but after a poor start in IPL 2009; she decided to accompany her team everywhere as per the schedule.
Chairman, Dhirubhai Ambani International School and co-owner of Mumbai Indians, Nita Ambani spearheaded the smartest strategy by making the bid for the most sought after player of IPL 3, Kieron Pollard. The constant travelling with the team to different locations also brought her closer to the team and helped empower the team with more confidence.
In this year’s IPL, Nita Ambani, wife of Mukesh Ambani, started out by bidding for a knockout of a team, holding up with them through all times and cheering them on in every single match the team played. According to the team and the management, Nita is a lucky mascot for them and her presence in almost every match boosts their morale.
On being asked about the disappointment after losing the finals, Nita said, “I had said in my interview just before the finals that may the best team win. And in sports, I think, it’s not just about winning but also about handling losses. And that’s what I have learnt living with these boys for the last several weeks. Surely I was disappointed, but it is what you have gained in your journey of life that matters. And for me, cricket has been a big learning experience.” According to her, IPL will get bigger and better in the seasons to come.
